Server Issues 4-6-06
Yeah, my server has been offline quite a bit today. My initial thought was that it was an overheating problem at the data center but further analysis has revealed that Apache is writing everything it does to the error log even if it is able to serve up the file. This is ok for a while until the log reaches a few gigs in size, fills up physical memory, fills up swap, then the machine just locks up hard. This is extremely strange behavior and I have know idea why it just started doing this at 1:08 am last night.
A great way to begin my break, eh.
*sigh*
The Letdown (Back to Normal)
So now that the database migration is over, I have no purpose.
Ok, I probably do but I just can't think of it right now. Also, I'm busy doing things that I totally neglected during the migration run up. Take a shower, shave, mow the grass, a whole slew of things that need to be done all the time. Not to mention the crap I let slip at work, lol. My employees will appreciate the disappearance of my beard that's for sure.
Anyway, I'm taking a few days off to just slack and maybe do some crazy ass hikes so I can replace all of my current problems with some fun new ones.
Game On
After 13 months, the database migration has started. In 13 hours, I'll know my fate.
Update 7:33 am PST: Most is well with one small glitch which we're working on a fix. All customer facing applications work :) It's been one helluva night...
Update 9:54 am PST: Well now, isn't this interesting. An completely unrelated problem is throwing a serious wrench into the works but the timing favors me. Had it occured just 72 minutes earlier, it would have been catostrauphic. Please standby...
Update 12:41 pm PST: And it's over. Though this massive outage was unrelated to the migration, it will be a hoot of actually convincing upper management of this.
A Soul Trapped In A Corpse
I don't watch E.R. a lot (or any TV for that matter) and when I do it's only to get a Maura Tierny fix, but last night's episode was the greatest acting performance I'd ever seen. James Woods played a former medical school professor stricken with ALS that shows up in the E.R. after contracting pneumonia. I can't even put the rest of the episode into words. If you Tivo'd or recorded, make sure you watch it. The classroom bit with the lecture on my favorite human body process, ATP was particularly good. That episode will stay with me for a quite while.
Yet another reason for me to get a living will...
25 Days of Rain

I know it's Seattle and this blog's name is Rain City Story, but 25 days of heavy rain is beginning to be a bit much. Lake Sammamish is at it's highest level in recorded history and we're already 5.7 inches of rainfall ahead of normal. In any event, it's better than a stalled high pressure system and rain always seems to put me a good mood.
The record for consecutive days of rain at Sea-Tac International Airport is 33 set back in 1953. Word on the street is that we'll beat that record this year.
