He was ready, we were not.

Kirby. Cubby. The Cubs. The Kirbster. Big Bidness. Big Guy. Big Twubbles. My Boy.

When the time had come for his very last car ride, he let me pick him up and carry him out to the car without even the slightest whimper (those with Bassetts know this isn’t normal) and he walked casually into the veterinarian’s office, even waiting patiently for me to hold the door for him. While we waited for a room, I silently wished he would become completely incapacitated or start barking at the other dogs, showing some life. Instead, he sat calmly between Amy’s legs, occasionally looking at us with the eyes that won us over a little over 3 years ago.

A million thoughts raced through my head, memories of the good times we had and my thoughts on death and what happens in the end. Our only goal was to end his pain which he was clearly in. While he was walking on his own, he hadn’t had a bite to eat or even a sip of water (Kirby had a serious drinking problem) and he hadn’t just been himself in weeks. I spent the majority of this week lying on the floor with him (still doing my conference calls at work) and he had finally let me look into his eyes for long periods of time. I saw sweetness and pain, pain he didn’t deserve.

Amy and I stayed with him while Dr. Sunderman injected h a powerful sedative followed by an overdose of a narcotic. He calmly fell asleep on his side next to Amy and I on the floor. His heart stopped about 30 seconds after the narcotic was administered. No movement whatsoever. And then he was gone.

We would have done anything to make him better- any amount of money, any amount of time. He was our child. His quality of life was the most important thing however and Amy and I could not fathom dozens of trips to the vet, surgeries, medicines and immobility. The cancer was too aggressive and we were out of time. He deserved better. We rescued him from an abusive family and someone who abandoned him. Though maybe he rescued us. He gave us better days. He deserved to be free of this pain. And now he is.

Thank you so much for finding us, big guy.

In the early stages of pregnancy, Amy was reading a book that said the fetus was the “size of a blueberry” and of course I adopted that as her nickname. Everyday I asked “how is the Blueberry doing?” Today, I finally got to see her face. It was pretty humbling. I’m still at a loss for words so until they come to me, here is the video of the 3D ultrasound we got this afternoon:

(it’s pretty long and there’s no sound but pretty cool).

I’ve always been fascinated by Black Holes, not because of the movie (though as a kid that was cool and I love the soundtrack) but because of the thought experiments that happen in my head when I think of them. Information loss, relative time, etc. If you have any interest at all in Black Holes, I highly recommend you check out Leonard Susskind’s book, The Black Hole War. It’s a pretty dumb title but a fascinating read, even if you’re not a theoretical physicist.

Anyway, since I read that book, I’ve done lots of calculations using the Schwarzschild Radius (Rs = 2GM/c2) to determine the size you would have to compress some matter (like the Earth or Sun) to create a gravitational constant (aka a black hole). So I found this cool video on YouTube and REALLY liked the video at towards the end when he describes the evidence of a black hole at the center of The Milky Way. Awesome stuff, I’ve read about it but had never seen those images.

But in the past two years, they’ve really messed with the formula, adding sensationalistic reporting and become VERY political. Aside from Larry Kudlow, I sincerely believe that everyone on that network is not playing with a full jar of marbles. Stunningly bad. So John Stewart has his way with them. Regardless of your political affiliation, I think you’ll find this interesting, maybe even enlightening. Enjoy.

I finally got around to uploading and tagging the 149 pics I took at the Stage 6 Amgen Tour of Californina time trial in Solvang, CA. While the pictures aren’t great (they’re not so bad if you look at the high resolution copies), I was there to see the race, not photograph it. I’ll leave that up to Graham Watson! You can view my Flickr Gallery here and I highly recommend using the slides how feature for this set. I did my best at labeling all the riders but missed some. If you know who they are, please leave a comment here or on the Flickr page.

I drove out from Colorodo Springs to experience this one stage because 1) I knew it’s where the race would be decided, 2) I love the bike porn of time trial bikes and 3) I’ve heard the riding is good around the Solvang area (it is). Was it worth the 2 day drive? You bet. When Lance Armstrong announced his retirement and his plans to do the race, most of the elite UCI teams signed up and this was probably the greatest field ever assembled on US soil. Additionally, Amy was still in her first trimester and my projects at work were really quiet enabling me to take most of the week off. The start had truly aligned. I’ll never forget it.

Here are some of my favorites of the big name riders (click the thumbnail for the full size image):

Race winner Levi Leipheimer:

The 2009 Amgen Tour of California time trial will be held on a 24 km (15 mile) course that starts and finishes in the Danish village of Solvang, CA. I had a chance to ride it 3 times today and here are my thoughts.

* The first mile will be the hardest. After .3 miles of flat, the road climbs madly for about 1/2 mile with grades around 9%. I hit a kilowatt every time on this section, the pros will likely hit 1.3 – 1.4 kw.

* The course is very technical with four 90 degree corners coming after fast downhills.

* Ballard Canyon is a twisty, short yet steep climb on a very crappy road that looks like it could have been paved my the incompetent folks at the Colorado Dept. of Transportation.

* There are very few flat and fast sections. I rode with a Cat. 1 who was riding a Specialized Transition TT bike and though he could drop me on the flats, his TT bike was no match for my road machine once the road tilted up.

* The course offers a lot of natural protection from the wind.

* My best time was a little over 35 minutes and that was riding with the guy I mentioned above. I think the winner can go sub 30.

I’ll be taking pics and will post them here. [UPDATE 2/25/09] Finally got my pics up here.

Amy and I went to our first OBGYN pregnancy appointment today and I totally was not expecting to see the baby’s heart beating. Though I’ve known she was pregnant for a couple of weeks now, it didn’t sink in until this moment. Wow. I really don’t know what else to say.

In this picture, the baby is near the middle right of the image inside the dark oval. About .49 cm. I don’t have video but you could clearly see the heart beating. Amy’s due date is 9/27/09.
