The Hook Brings You Back

Written by Michael on May 25th, 2007

Yesterday, I wrote about rediscovering old music and for some reason, one of them- Blues Traveler’s Hook stayed in my head all day. Around 2 am, I woke up dying of thirst (common here at this altitude) and still had the damn melody in my head. I knew that I knew the melody from somewhere else besides this song but I just couldn’t place it. Slowly dissecting it in my head, I had a hunch and Googled it. I was right!

Take a listen and tell me what classical music this song is based on. You can try Googling, but you won’t find it unless you have the composer in the query as well. And that’s cheating anyway. Don’t let John Popper’s vocals distract you, just listen to the rhythm guitar and you’ll recognize the “hook.”

I was so excited because I suck at playing or recognizing specific notes and can’t believe it took me almost 13 years (the song was released in September 1994) to figure this out. My subconscious mind was hard at work and all those years of being a classical music geek finally paid off.

That song really is incredible, specifically for the “hook” factor, which is exactly what it is about to begin with. It’s funny to see you write about this because that same tune has alwas stuck in my head after hearing it - precicely the same way that the piece if well known classical music from which it borrows does. Yes, I do know which piece it is, but I’m not telling spoiling it..

ok, a hint: you’d recognize part of the name as a camera

That actually was an easy guess for your mom (can’t fool me when it comes to music :>)). I remember asking you to get the classical piece for me to be played on a special day in my life. I couldn’t remember the name of the classic at the time, but I have always loved that tune. I must admit, it took me about a minute to figure it out, but once I did I packed a belly full of laughs.

Well Kell, I seriously doubt that Tom Petty’s “You Wrecked Me” could be considered “classical” but I appreciate the try. Guess again…

    P.S. Happy Birthday!
