The mountain passes weren't bad at all (it was late September), and I don't remember too many long lonely stretches of road. On the one hand, I think they go pretty quickly because you can drive as fast as you want, and on the other hand, I had books on tape to keep me entertained. Also, the countryside is beautiful. I would say the worst part of the trip was going through Spokane. After awhile, driving anywhere can get exhausting, so I would recommend going with the shorter route. Though I'm being paid more than I ever have before (including per diem allowance), renting a car would cost me over $1,000 a month and then I would have the the $400 airline tickets to purchase.
