Smooth Move, Prudential

Written by Michael on October 23rd, 2006

When I left my last job, I elected tol roll over my 401k into an IRA. Two weeks went by and I still hadn’t had my account number so I called Prudential today and was told that a check for $18,706.44 had been sent to my address on 12/17 and cashed, deposited into Silicon Valley Bank. I asked them what my address on file was and was told 1201 Western Ave. Huh? That was my old work address. So then I ask who the check was made out to. It was paid to the order of my Human Resoruces director at the company. Prudential claims it was in the company’s name and I was listed as the plan administrator (WTF) so it’s my problem to sort this out. That didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me for a lot of legal reasons (like how did I order the rollover for an account other than mine without paperwork) which I don’t need to explain here.

Great. Now I have to go back to the company who is pissed at me for leaving, ask them for my 18 grand back and make sure it’s deposited back into a retirement account without me being charged for early withdrawal. That should be a hoot.

On the bright side, according to Prudential Retirment, the early distribution counts against the company instead of me since their Tax ID was the one on file and the one reported to the IRS. I can’t decide who’s the more incompent party here. Either way, I’m glad I got outta there…

Yeah, but I just couldn’t trust the financial advisors and especially the management there ;)
