First Impressions

Monday, March 31st, 2003

Tech Writing- This class is gonna hurt. She said half the class will be gone within the first week and we will do more writing in this class than all of high school and college (101 & 102) combined. Final project is supposed to be 100-125 pages long.

Calc- My teacher is HOT and probably younger than I am. She seems excited about the subject and has a teaching style similar to Mr. Rucker.

Espanol- Total immersion. He said maybe 15 words in English the whole hour. I was starting to sweat. I really want to learn it so I’ll stick it out. If it weren’t for Amy, I would have been gone by the first 10 minutes!

My tells body me not to, but it’s just to nice too stay inside today. I quick but easy 55 miles is in order.

My Last Day of Freedom

A Deer in the North Cascades National Park

I don’t know what it is about this picture but I love it. I think it’s the color contrast.

School starts tomorrow and I’m not looking forward to it like I usually do. I got my 65 miles in to give me 907 for the month. My body isn’t recovering well from these rides. I’m not even riding that hard. I wonder if I picked up a bug or something. I was hoping my trip to Tampa would give me the rest that I needed.

My ride and recovery pretty much sums up my whole day.

Gastro-Explosion

What ever you do, DON’T look into Lucy’s eyes. If you do, you will be under her evil control.

The above picture is of Carolyn and Tony’s cat Lucy and is just about the funniest damn picture of a cat I have ever seen.

And 35 miles of hell. The first 35 miles of the ride today went really well. I was averaging over 20 mph and felt great. When I hit the turn around point exactly at Shilshole Bay Marina, I felt my stomach rumble. Even though I was incredibly thirsty, I didn’t stop at the Fred Meyer’s becasue I was afraid that if I stopped, I wouldn’t get going again. Though 8 mph is hardly going.

I started vomiting at the UW campus (they deserve it anyway) and I started sweating profusely. This is pretty much how I spent the next 25 miles. I don’t think I’ve ever had a harder ride. I didn’t see how it would be possible to make it home. I had my cell phone but I knew I couldn’t stop.

I don’t know what it was that made me sick but I’m pretty sure it was something I ate last night because I only had a couple of bowls of Smorz cereal this morning.

On another note, I’ve given up on the Camelback Hydration system. It’s a nice idea but I don’t think there’s much aerodynamic benefit. And having the damn thing on my back drove me nuts. And before you say anything, I did wash the new water bottle out thoroghly before riding this morning. If I can get in 62 miles tomorrow, I’ll achieve my goal of 900 miles for March.

My Favorite Movies and Why

I watched A.I. again tonight and at the end thought this had to be in my best movie of all time list. Then that got me thinking about the movies on my list and why. I think the movies I like say a lot about me so here’s the list:

1) Cast Away- I was on an island. I had a Wilson. I had a Kelly. The tide brought something in. It’s really hard for me to watch.

2) The Matrix- An incredible story with cool technology and cool characters. It’s very immersing and I can watch it over and over and over.

3) Clue- It’s so over the top stupid that I love it. I remember the first time I saw it in the theatre with my family on new year’s eve in 1985. A classic.

4) Forest Gump- Completely unbelievable but a great story. If you didn’t cry at the end, you’re not human.

5) A.I.- It made me think about what “real” and “love” are. When the aliens find New York under ice, it made me think Spielberg stole a dream I once had.

6) Joe Vs. The Volcano- Everyone laughs when I say this but I just love it. The Waponee Woo with the orange soda addiction is a high point. It’s a great feel good story.

7) Titanic- I didn’t ecpect much when I went into the theatre but once it began, I forgot I was there. I’ve always been fascinated with the Titanic and I thought it was incredibly done. Even the love story was cool.

8) Wargames- The first thing to make me think about computers and what they could do. I really liked the NORAD scenes too.

9) American Beauty- The tagline “look closer” says it all. Great dialogue.

10) Groudhog Day- Wouldn’t everybody love a day where they could do anything they wanted and wake up the next day and start all over? Another great feel good story.

There are others I really like but the above are my all time faves. Hands down. What are yours?

I slept pretty well last night but didn’t get to see Amy much. I barely remember her getting ready for school and her spanish camp thing. She’s speding the night with some high school students in North Bend. She won’t be back until tomorrow night :( My ride today sucked. It was warm with little wind but I just couldn’t find a decent tempo and my heart rate was way too high. I look forward to tomorrow.

I miss Kiersten already!
