Excellence Is…

Friday, January 31st, 2003

On my way to math class today I saw this poster that I liked. It said:

Excellence is the result of…

Caring more
than others think is wise.
Risking more
than others think is safe.
Dreaming more
than others think is practical.
and Expecting more,
than others think is possible.

I think I live by all of these except the dreaming part. So why am I not excellent then? :)

I did an all out 30-mile time trial today and beat yesterday’s performance by 3:21. Nice way to finish off the month of January. Could this be the year? It better be, because I figure this will be the last year of my life that I will be able to train seriously and not have to worry about working and stuff. Don’t get me wrong, school keeps me plenty busy but at least I can do school stuff at 2am.

I added two to sections in the right hand column- “currently reading” and “year to date mileage”.

The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste

dos.jpg
I am so irritated. Today in my IT (information technology) class, our instructor asked us to list the first seven DOS files that load on startup. Yep, seven. Only thing is, I think there’s only five. It depends what’s in the Autoexec.bat file that determines what loads next. If DOS is anticipating loading a Windows 9x environment, it will load USER.DAT, SYSTEM.DAT and then WIN.COM. But otherwise, I think there’s only five:

1) IO.SYS
2) MSDOS.SYS
3) CONFIG.SYS
4) COMMAND.COM
5) AUTOEXEC.BAT

I wonder if it’s a trick question. And who cares anyway? It’s freaking DOS. We will rarely ever run into it and if we do, we will tell clients they have no choice but to upgrade to an NT based system. I have been racking my brain all night. I’ve posted to some newsgroups and read some books. I was liking the class for a while but now I hate it. I actually look forward to math everday. We are wasting our time and brain power on antiquated technologies that we will never see. It’s not like math where you may never use it but at least you are building a foundation. This is akin to learning how to service a wash and wringer instead of a washing machine. I can understand teaching us the command line but there are much better ways.

Had best ride of the year so far. 30 miles on the trainer and I almost saw it. My endurance has improved dramatically over the past month. It is warm but has been raining all week.

I feel like I’m getting behind in everything. I dread the weekend.

The Rainy Season

Wednesday, January 29th, 2003

It’s the rainy season here in Seattle. We’ve finally gotten some good precipitation. Evoryone thinks that it rains all the time here. Actually, Seattle receives less rainfall on an annual basis than my old hometown Columbus, OH. Mainly due to the fact that it just “mists” up here where it pours in Ohio. Anyway, it’s a nice change from the bone dry and polluted air days. And I don’t mind it as much this year now that I have an indoor torture device- uh, I mean trainer.

I used the Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection tonight to fix Nic’s computer. It was pretty cool since I had only read about it and never got to actually play with it. I couldn’t figure out her Palm Pilot for some reason. I’m at a slight disadvantage since I’ve never had one of those. She forgot to charge it and it dumped all of her data. So I’m trying to recover it off of her old PC.

Check out this story about a guy who got fired just for keeping a blog like I do. I’d say he’s got a pretty strong legal case. That used to always piss me off when I’d get busted for surfing the internet when some people would take 10 minute smoke breaks every hour. That adds up to 80 minutes a day!!

Mr. Short Term Memory

Tuesday, January 28th, 2003

So I realized tonight that I forgot both Nancy and Monica’s birthdays. Last year I thought I was so smart when I put everything into Outlook. I should have known better because I am constantly reformatting my C: partition. Speaking of computers I was humiliated today when I missed one question out of 25. It was a super easy question that I knew the answer to. I just missed one of the letters when transferring it to the Scantron form. This class is so frustrating! We spent an HOUR today removing and replacing a floppy drive. I could do this in two minutes with a 12 pack of beer in me and blindfolded. But I can solve systems of linear equations with a graphing calculator so go figure.

I rode inside tonight for 70 minutes covering a little over 29 miles. Good ride but I took a nap after I got home from school and I always ride better at night. I got the 1996 Mt. Everest Expedition IMAX version in the mail today from Netflix. I highly recommend them by the way. Great idea.

I think I’ll E-mail Monica and Nancy now.

Some Comic Relief

Monday, January 27th, 2003

Amy found this site the other day at school (amazing what 20 grand will buy these days) and we were watching it while trying to do math. It’s amazingly stupid yet funny. And I’m really impressed by the amount of time this guy must spend doing Flash animation. The whole site is Homestarruner.com, but you should go HERE and play these little movies for some quick laughs. Make sure you have sound on (but not too loud) and that you type the domain name very carefully. Otherwise, you’ll end up in HR explaining your bizarre porn site fetish.
